    Januvia

    What is Januvia

Januvia helps lower the level of sugar in blood. It is an oral anti-diabetic drug used to treat patients with type-2 diabetes. This medicine belongs to the DPP-4 inhibitors class of drugs.

    How does Januvia work?

Januvia works by increasing the levels of incretins in the body that basically control blood sugar by boosting the release of insulin. Januvia also helps lower the amount of sugar made by the liver and can be effective when sugar levels are high, especially after a meal. It is unlikely that this drug can cause low sugar levels in the blood. However, low sugar levels can occur if this medication is being taken in combination with other anti-diabetic drugs.

    Who should take Januvia?

Januvia is usually prescribed to patients suffering from type-2 diabetes. Since type-2 diabetes causes glucose in the blood to rise, the risk of medical problems such as kidney disease, heart disease and blindness increases. Type-2 diabetic patients must keep their blood sugar levels stable. Januvia is sometimes prescribed in combination with other diabetic medication, diet and exercise programs.

    How should I take Januvia?

Januvia is available in the form of tablets that come in different strengths. Depending on your condition and medical diagnosis, you may be prescribed Januvia 25mg, Januvia 50mg or Januvia 100mg tablets. Before you start taking this medication, it is important that you visit your doctor and get more information. Only a doctor can best evaluate your condition and prescribe you the appropriate dosage.

Depending on your doctor's instruction, the tablets can be taken orally with water or food. Usually, patients are required to take the medication once a day.

What precautions should I take before taking Januvia?

Before you start you should tell your doctor about any other medication you are on such as prescription drugs, supplements and herbal products. Your doctor must be aware of any medical condition you may have. This includes:

    • Allergies
    • Kidney disease
    • Pancreatic disease
    • Gallstones

Januvia may cause dizziness or drowsiness which means you should avoid driving or undertaking any task that requires you to be alert. Avoid consuming alcohol with this medication as it may increase the risk of developing low blood sugar. Januvia is a drug that should only be taken when needed.

What are the side effects of Januvia?

Taking Januvia for the treatment of type-2 diabetes can come with various side effects. These include the following:

    • Anxiety
    • Blurred vision
    • Cold sweats
    • Confusion
    • Chills
