Baclofen is a widely-used skeletal muscle relaxant. It is available under the brand name of Gablofen and Lioresal. It is a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) derivative, which is a specific agonist of GABA(B) receptors.
The medication is mostly used to treat muscle spasticity or muscle spasms, which can be caused due to different conditions or spinal cord injuries. The FDA approved Baclofen in 1977.
Baclofen works by helping skeletal muscles relax. The drug is related to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter in the brain that is used by nerves to communicate with one another. GABA can block the activity of some nerves, which are responsible for the contraction and relaxation of skeletal muscles. Baclofen is available both as a tablet and injection.
Baclofen is typically prescribed to individuals who suffer from muscle spasms, spinal cord diseases and spinal injuries. Doctors may also prescribe this medication to individuals who experience pain caused by multiple sclerosis, muscle clonus and rigidity. Prior to 2013, Baclofen was used to treat alcohol withdrawal syndrome as well.
Baclofen is mostly available in tablet form. Before you start taking this medication, you must schedule an appointment with your doctor. Your doctor will be able to guide you, evaluate your current medical condition, and prescribe an appropriate dosage. Baclofen can be bought in the following strengths:
