    Lipitor

    What is Lipitor?

Lipitor is the brand name of atorvastatin. This medicine belongs to a group of drugs that reduce the levels of bad cholesterol (low density lipoprotein or LDL). This medication also helps increase the levels of good cholesterol (high density lipoprotein or HDL).

    What is Lipitor Used For?

Lipitor is used to help reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. This may help decrease the need for heart surgery in individuals who either have a heart disease or are at the risk of developing one. Cholesterol and fats tend to accumulate along the walls of the arteries, a process known as atherosclerosis. This results in decreased blood flow and therefore less oxygen is supplied to the heart, brain and other parts of the body. Lowering cholesterol and fats with Lipitor has shown to prevent heart disease, angina, heart attacks and strokes.

What are the Side Effects of Lipitor?

As with all medications, Lipitor has its set of side effects as well. If you experience any of the following, you are advised to get in touch with your doctor immediately:

    • Diarrhea
    • Heartburn
    • Gas
    • Joint pain
    • Confusion
    • Memory loss or forgetfulness

Lipitor may cause some serious side effects as well. If you experience any of these, you are advised to get medical help right away:

    • Muscle pain, weakness or tenderness
    • Fever
    • Unusual bleeding or bruising
    • Weakness
    • Loss of appetite
    • Extreme tiredness
    • Chest pain
    • Nausea
    • Flu-like symptoms
    • Dark colored urine
    • Itching
    • Hives
    • Difficulty in breathing or swallowing
    • Hoarseness
    • Rash
    • Swelling of the face, lips, throat, tongue, feet, ankles, lower legs or hands

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember it, especially if it is still more than 12 hours until your next dose. If it is less than 12 hours till your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose.

What if I overdose on Lipitor?

In case of an overdose, get in touch with the local poison control center immediately. However, if the patient is not breathing or has collapsed, call 911 for emergency medical assistance.
