    Clopidogrel

    What is Clopidogrel?

Clopidogrel is a drug used to prevent strokes and heart attacks in patients who are suffering from heart and peripheral vascular diseases. The medication is available under the brand name Plavix which is an anti platelet drug.

    How does Clopidogrel work?

Clopidogrel works by preventing formation of blood clots. Platelets are small cell fragments that are found in the blood. They help the blood to clot to prevent bleeding.  Clopidogrel prevents platelets from sticking together or against the blood vessel walls to form clots.

    Who should take Clopidogrel?

This medication is usually prescribed to lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes in patients who already have had a heart attack or stroke. It is also given to patients who have blood circulatory problems, unstable angina, and other heart conditions.

    How to take Clopidogrel?

Consult your doctor before taking this medication. Your doctor will diagnose your condition and prescribe the right dosage. Clopidogrel is available in the form of tablets of different strengths. You may be given Clopidogrel 75mg tablets or Clopidogrel 300mg tablets, depending on your need.

Since the medication is in a tablet form, you can take it orally with water or food. Your doctor will guide you on how and when you should take the medication. Do not chew or dissolve the tablet as it may leave behind a bitter taste and may be harder to swallow.

Clopidogrel tablets should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from the reach of children. Make sure you don't take more or less than the recommended dosage. If you think you have overdosed, call your doctor immediately or your local poison control center. Always call for help if you do not understand the instructions on the label.

What precautions to take when taking Clopidogrel?

It is recommended that you do not take Clopidogrel unless your doctor has prescribed. This medication should not be taken if you have an active bleeding problem (stomach ulcer), if you are allergic to any ingredient found in Clopidogrel, and if you are already taking proton pump inhibitors. Also, tell your doctor

    • If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
    • If you are breast-feeding
    • If you are taking prescription or non-prescription medication
    • If you have any bone marrow or liver disease
    • If you have had any surgery recently
    • If you have a bleeding disease such as hemophilia

Avoid alcohol when taking Clopidogrel as it can increase the chance of stomach bleeding. You should also be careful around sharp objects and avoid getting cut or injured.
