    Nifedipine

    What is Nifedipine?

Nifedipine is a drug used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). It belongs to a group of drugs called calcium channel blockers. Nifedipine is included in the World Health Organization’s (WHO) list of essential medicines that should be available in every basic health system. Nifedipine is also marketed under the brand names Procardia XL and Nifedical XL.

    How does Nifedipine work?

Did you know that calcium causes muscle cells and vessels to contract and increase the blood pressure? Since Nifedipine is a calcium channel blocker, it helps the blood vessels relax and widen. This allows blood to flow more freely through the vessels and lowers overall blood pressure.

    Who should take Nifedipine?

Doctors usually prescribe Nifedipine to patients who are suffering from hypertension. This medication can also be taken for angina pain. It is important to control high blood pressure as it can damage blood vessels, kidneys, brain, and other organs of the body.

    How to take Nifedipine?

Nifedipine is available in the form of tablets. This medication should not be taken without the consent of the doctor. A doctor can evaluate your symptoms accurately and prescribe the right dosage for you. Nifedipine tablets are available in different strengths. Depending on your medical condition and need, your doctor may prescribe you the following strengths:

    • Nifedipine 90mg
    • Nifedipine 60mg
    • Nifedipine 30mg

You must take the tablet according to your doctor’s directions. You may be asked to take the tablet with water or food on a daily basis. If you have any doubt or confusion about the dosage, please consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
Make sure you do not crush or chew the tablet. To avoid an overdose, do not take more than the recommended dosage even if you have skipped a dose. If you think you have overdosed, call your local poison control center immediately.

    What precautions should you take?

Nifedipine can make you feel dizzy so it is important that you avoid participating in any activity that requires alertness such as driving. Do not drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit while taking Nifedipine.
    Also, tell your doctor about:

    • Any allergies you may have
    • Any heart problem you had or have (congestive heart failure)
    • Any liver problem you have
