    Estradiol

    What is Estradiol?

Estradiol is a female hormone medication that helps in the regulation of estrous and menstrual female reproductive cycles. It is a type of estrogen sex hormone and steroid.

Estradiol has the chemical names Beta-Estradiol, Oestradiol, Dihydrofolliculin, and 17beta-Estradiol. This drug has been approved by the FDA and falls in the pharmacologic class of estrogen receptor agonists.

    How does Estradiol work?

Estrogen is important for the maintenance and normal functioning of the female reproductive system. Estradiol works by binding and activating specific nuclear receptors. The drug acts as a growth hormone for the reproductive system.

Estradiol can be used to help maintain the eggs inside ovaries. It is also used for supporting bone growth especially in post-menopausal age.

    Who should take Estradiol?

This medication is typically prescribed to estradiol deficient women and can be used as an effective estrogen treatment. Doctors may also prescribe this medication to women experiencing menopause. In some cases, women who have breast cancer or ovarian failure may also be required to take the medication as their bodies may not be producing sufficient estrogen. Other conditions that may be treated with this medication are:

    • Defective internal secretion of ovaries
    • Wasting of tissue of the vulva
    • Vaginal inflammation due to loss of hormone stimulation

    How to take Estradiol?

Before you start taking this medication, you must consult your doctor. Your doctor will be able to diagnose your condition and prescribe the appropriate strength. Estradiol tablets are available in different strengths such as estradiol 0.5mg tablet, estradiol 1mg tablet and estradiol 2mg tablet.

Estradiol is taken orally, with water or food, depending on your doctor's instructions. Make sure you do not crush, chew or dissolve the tablet as this may increase the risk of side-effects. The dosage can be adjusted later depending on your body's response to the treatment.

What precautions should I take before using Estradiol?

Before you start taking this medication, make sure your doctor is aware of your medical history. Inform your doctor about any medical condition(s) you may have. This includes allergic reactions, vaginal bleeding due to unknown causes, heart disease, stroke, blood clotting disorders, liver or kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, underactive thyroid, mineral imbalance, hormonal problems, lupus, gall bladder disease, asthma, migraine, seizures, blood disorders, dementia/depression and uterus problems.

When taking this medication, avoid the use of tobacco as it will increase the risk of high blood pressure and blood clots, especially if you are over the age of 35. Also, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun or tanning beds. If you are pregnant or suspect pregnancy, immediately tell your doctor.

Estradiol is not recommended for pregnant women.
