Allegra is the brand name used for tablets which contain Fexofenadine hydrochloride as the active ingredient. This medication is used for the treatment of seasonal allergies.
Allegra Allergy Medicine is a second generation antihistamine. It is used to treat the reactions and symptoms of seasonal allergies and hives.
Histamines are chemicals in the body which trigger signs and symptoms of allergic reactions. This includes everything from swelling, sneezing, itching, and watery eyes. Mast cells store histamine and release them when exposed to an allergen. Histamine gets attached to cells, thereby becoming ‘activated’ due to the receptors. Once activated other chemicals are released that cause the symptoms of an allergic reaction.
Allegra, or Fexofenadine, works to block one type of receptor for histamine, the H1 receptor. By doing so, it prevents the activation of H1 receptor-containing cells by histamine.
Allegra, unlike first generation antihistamines, doesn’t typically cause drowsiness and is considered to be a non-sedative.
Fexofenadine was approved by the FDA in July 1995.
