    Prilosec

    What is Prilosec Used For?

Prilosec Omeprazole is used in the treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). It is a condition in which the backward flow of acid from the stomach causes heartburn and possible injury to the esophagus (the tube that connects the throat and the stomach). This medication treats the symptoms of GERD, enables the esophagus to heal and prevents further harm. Conditions where the stomach produces too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, are also treated by Prilosec.

    How to Use Prilosec?

Prilosec Omeprazole is available as a delayed-release capsule. The delayed release capsule releases a steady stream of medication into the intestine. This prevents the medication from breaking down due to the acids in the stomach immediately.

Prilosec is also available as delayed-release granules for suspension, meant to be mixed with water and taken orally. The delayed-release capsules should ideally be taken at least 1 hour before a meal. They are typically taken once a day, however they can be taken  twice a day as well, if prescribed by the doctor. The one-tablet per day routine needs to be followed for 14 days in a row. This 14-day treatment can be repeated once every four months, if the need arises. Ideally you should try to take this medicine around the same time every day. Do not take more or less than what is prescribed by the doctor. Do not crush, split or chew delayed-release tablets. Always swallow the capsule whole. Continue to take this medicine even if you start to feel better.

What are the side effects of Prilosec?

As with any other medication, Prilosec might also cause certain side effects. You are advised to get in touch with your doctor if any of the symptoms worsen or if any of the following start to appear:

    • Constipation

What precautions should you take before using Prilosec?

    • Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant soon

What should you do in case of a missed dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you realize it. If it is time for the next dose already, do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.
