Estradiol is a female hormone medication that helps in the regulation of estrous and menstrual female reproductive cycles. It is a type of estrogen sex hormone and steroid.
Estradiol has the chemical names Beta-Estradiol, Oestradiol, Dihydrofolliculin, and 17beta-Estradiol. This drug has been approved by the FDA and falls in the pharmacologic class of estrogen receptor agonists.
Estrogen is important for the maintenance and normal functioning of the female reproductive system. Estradiol works by binding and activating specific nuclear receptors. The drug acts as a growth hormone for the reproductive system.
Estradiol can be used to help maintain the eggs inside ovaries. It is also used for supporting bone growth especially in post-menopausal age.
This medication is typically prescribed to estradiol deficient women and can be used as an effective estrogen treatment. Doctors may also prescribe this medication to women experiencing menopause. In some cases, women who have breast cancer or ovarian failure may also be required to take the medication as their bodies may not be producing sufficient estrogen. This includes allergic reactions, vaginal bleeding due to unknown causes, heart disease, stroke, blood clotting disorders, liver or kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, underactive thyroid, mineral imbalance, hormonal problems, lupus, gall bladder disease, asthma, migraine, seizures, blood disorders, dementia/depression and uterus problems.
When taking this medication, avoid the use of tobacco as it will increase the risk of high blood pressure and blood clots, especially if you are over the age of 35. Also, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun or tanning beds. If you are pregnant or suspect pregnancy, immediately tell your doctor.
Estradiol is not recommended for pregnant women.
