Lisinopril is a medication prescribed for the treatment of high blood pressure. Along with other medications, it is used to treat heart failure. It is also used to improve survival chances after a person has suffered from a heart attack.
Lisinopril belongs to a class of medicines called Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. This medication acts by reducing certain chemicals that cause the blood vessels to tighten, allowing a smoother and more efficient pumping of the blood by the heart.
Lisinopril is available in the following strengths:
As mentioned earlier, Lisinopril is prescribed to treat high blood pressure. The high blood pressure or hypertension is a common condition when untreated could cause serious damage. Hypertension is known to have damaged vital organs such as the heart, brain, kidneys, blood vessels and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart diseases, heart failure, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, etc.
Alongside medication, lifestyle changes, including eating a healthy diet that is low in fat and salt, can result in maintaining normal blood pressure. Furthermore, maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking/drinking and exercising at least 30 minutes every day can also help.
Lisinopril comes in tablet form that can be taken orally, once a day. You are advised to take it around the same time every day and follow the prescription label carefully. If you have any confusion, be sure to ask your doctor or pharmacist. Do not take Lisinopril more or less than the prescribed dosage.
This medication does not cure heart failure. It does, however, control the condition to a certain extent. Therefore, do not stop taking Lisinopril even if you feel well. If you are planning to stop taking the medication abruptly, make sure you discuss it with your doctor first.
Lisinopril may cause several side effects. In case you suffer from any of these, get in touch with your doctor.
