    Irbesartan

    What is Irbesartan?

Irbesartan is a drug mainly used to treat hypertension and high blood pressure. It belongs to the group of drugs called angiotensin 2 receptor antagonists. Irbesartan is commonly available under the brand name Avapro. The FDA approved Avapro in 2012 for the treatment of high blood pressure.

    How does Irbesartan work?

Irbesartan works by dilating and relaxing blood vessels. This helps reduce blood pressure. Angiotensin is a powerful chemical that attaches itself to blood vessels and causes them to restrict. Irbesartan blocks this receptor or chemical agent and helps the blood vessels relax.

    Who should take Irbesartan?

Irbesartan is primarily prescribed to patients suffering from hyper tension. However, in some cases, it is also used to treat kidney problems caused by type-2 diabetes. Irbesartan can be used in combination with other drugs to treat high blood pressure. Remember that high blood pressure can cause damage to other organs such as the brain, kidneys, and heart.

    How to take Irbesartan?

Your doctor will evaluate your symptoms and prescribe the right dosage and strength of the medication. Depending on the severity of your medical condition, you may be prescribed Irbesartan 75mg tablet, Irbesartan 150mg tablet, or Irbesartan 300mg tablet.

You can take the tablet orally with water or food. You should also read the directions on the prescription label carefully. Do not crush or chew the tablets, and do not take more than the required dosage. Changes in your dosage can only be made once your doctor has examined your response to the treatment.

    What precautions should I take?

Your doctor should be aware of any other medical condition you may have. There are certain precautions you must take before starting the treatment. Tell your doctor:

    • If you are pregnant
    • If you are allergic to any ingredient or chemical found in Irbesartan
    • If you have diabetes
    • If you have kidney problems
    • If you have liver disease
    • If you suffer from dehydration
    • If you have allergies
    • If you plan to become pregnant or are breast feeding
    • If you have a history of angioedema
    • If you have a history of heart problems
    • If you have had a stroke or a recent heart attack
    • If you are on dialysis
    • If you have electrolyte problems
    • If you have a low blood volume
    • If you are taking medicines which include diuretics, potassium-sparing diuretics, Lithium, Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or ACE inhibitors

Avoid driving, exercise, or operating any heavy machinery as Irbesartan could cause fainting or light headedness.
