What is Amlodipine Besylate 5 mg?
Amlodipine besylate is the besylate salt of amlodipine. Commonly used for treating hypertension and Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), it is a long-acting
calcium channel blocker described chemically as 3-Ethyl-5-methyl. Its empirical formula is C20H25CIN2O5•C6H6O3S and here is an illustration of its
Amlodipine Besylate 5mg tablets are second generation calcium antagonists (slow-channel blocker or a calcium ion antagonist). It is also a peripheral
arterial vasodilator which reduces peripheral vascular resistance and blood pressure. Their function is to deter or prevent the influx of calcium ions into
cardiac muscles and vascular smooth muscle.
The tablets are intended for oral administration. In addition, it has amlodipine besylate as an active ingredient. The inactive ingredients include
microcrystalline cellulose, anhydrous, sodium starch glycolate, dibasic calcium phosphate, and magnesium stearate.
What is Amlodipine Besylate 5mg Tablets Used for?

Amlodipine Besylate tablets are used in the treatment of hypertension, with a recommended minimum dosage of 5mg daily. They may be taken alone or in

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)
i. Chronic Stable Angina
Chest discomfort caused when the heart is working hard and requires more oxygen. An example would be during exercise.
Amlodipine besylate tablets are used to treat the symptoms of chronic stable angina. They may be taken alone or in conjunction with other antianginal
ii. Vasospastic Angina (Prinzmetal's or Variant Angina)
Pain in Vasospastic Angina occurs when the person is at rest. These attacks usually happen between midnight and early morning and are quite painful.
Amlodipine besylate tablets are used in cases of confirmed or suspected vasospastic angina. These tablets may be taken in conjunction with other
antianginal agents or alone as prescribed by the primary physician.
iii. Angiographically Documented CAD
Amlodipine besylate tablets are used to reduce the likelihood of a coronary revascularization procedure or the risk of hospitalization due to angina. This
particularly applies to those patients who have recently been exhibiting signs of CAD by angiography and haven't suffered from heart failure or an ejection
fraction (less than 40%).
Amlodipine Besylate 5mg Side Effects
In clinical trials the following side effects were reported. These range from mild to moderate levels.
The known side effects and warnings related to amlodipine besylate 5mg tablets include:
- Caution must be taken, particularly by those patients with severe aortic stenosis as asymptomatic hypotension may occur. Due to the fact that
vasodilation that results from amlodipine besylate tablets is gradual in onset, acute hypotension has rarely been reported after oral administration.
- Angina conditions could worsen or acute myocardial infarction could develop when the tablets are initially taken. This could happen by increasing the
dose as well, especially in patients with severe CAD.
- Amlodipine is not a beta-blocker. As a result it gives no protection against the dangers of abrupt beta-blocker withdrawal. It is recommended that any
withdrawal should be achieved by a gradual reduction of the dose.
- Patients with severe hepatic impairment should exercise caution since amlodipine is extensively metabolized by the liver. Titration of the medication
will be required; an initial low dosage could gradually be increased and monitored by your doctor.
- The most common side effects that have been reported are headache and edema.
As Amlodipine Besylate comes with a number of side effects, the recommendation is to strictly follow the doctor's instructions.
