Methionine is commonly used to acidify the urine and is not recommended for kittens or animals with renal failure, pancreatic disease, or liver insufficiency. Acidifying the urine may help prevent and treat certain types of stone formations and to reduce odor from the urine. Methionine also comes in a tablet form, but sometimes it is difficult for owners to give tablets to their pets. Methigel provides an alternative way to give methionine. Methigel can be placed directly into the mouth or on the pet’s nose for the pet to lick off and swallow on their own. Possible adverse effects include gastrointestinal upset. If given with food, methionine may have reduced side effects and increased efficacy. Instead of being mixed in with food like the tablet form, Methigel can be given before meals or as directed by the prescriber. It is important to give your pet this medication exactly as prescribed and to not discontinue the drug without consulting with your pet's veterinarian. If you miss giving your pet a dose, give it to him as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal schedule. If you are unsure about when to give a missed dose, contact your pet's veterinarian.
Not for use in animals less than 1 year of age. Administer orally. Methigel® is extremely palatable. To stimulate taste interest, place a small amount of Methigel on animal's nose or directly into mouth. For Dogs: Administer 1 teaspoon daily. For Cats: Administer 1/2 teaspoon daily.
