Primor 240mg Tablets
For Use in Dogs Only
DESCRIPTION:Primor is an antimicrobial drug containing sulfadimethoxine and ormetoprim in a 5 to 1 ratio. The combination of these 2 compounds results in the potentiation of sulfadimethoxine, providing increased efficacy, a broadened spectrum of activity to include some sulfonamide-resistant organisms, and reduction in the rate of resistance development.
USES:Primor is made up of two antibiotics: sulfadimethoxine and ormetoprim. Together, these antibiotics are even more powerful than when they are used alone, as they block two sequential steps in bacterial folic acid synthesis. The net effect is not only the limiting of bacterial growth, but the killing of bacteria as well.
CAUTION: Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:Tell your veterinarian if your pet is allergic to Primor or other sulfonamides (sulfa drugs). Tell your veterinarian if your pet has liver disease or blood dyscrasias, is dehydrated, or is pregnant or lactating. Also tell your veterinarian what other medication, including vitamins and supplements, that you are giving your pet while giving Primor.
WARNINGS: Sulfa crystals may appear in your pet's urine. Your pet should be allowed to drink plenty of water while taking this medication. Other side effects that may occur include KCS or dry eye, anemia, fever, loss of appetite, vomiting or diarrhea, joint inflammation, kidney damage, or skin rash. Stop the medication and contact your veterinarian if any of the above symptoms occur. Other side effects may also occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to your pet. If your pet experiences an allergic reaction, signs may include facial swelling, hives, scratching, and sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, or coma. If these signs occur, contact your veterinarian immediately./p>
PRECAUTIONS:Identification of infecting organisms should be made either by microscopic roll smear evaluation or by culture as appropriate. Antibiotic susceptibility of the pathogenic organism(s) should be determined prior to use of this preparation.Decreased water consumption and aciduria enhance the probability of the formation of sulfonamide crystals in the urine. Monitoring urine samples for crystal formation is recommended from animals with acid urine receiving the drug. As with any sulfonamide therapy, make certain dogs maintain adequate water intake. If dogs show no improvement within 2 or 3 days, reevaluate the diagnosis. Safety in breeding dogs has not been established.
